Overview

The Glencoe Public Library Board of Trustees (Board) is taking needed next steps to improve the library building and grounds. The Library’s strategic plan includes an organizational goal of improving the facilities to ensure they can meet the current and future needs of our community.

Background

In 2021, the Board hired a consultant to assess the physical state of the library building and grounds. The assessment report identified multiple issues within our aging building that need to be addressed soon. The Board and Executive Director believe that fixing those issues presents an opportunity to improve the building in response to recent community feedback from 2023 which helped shape the Library’s strategic plan.

On February 26, the Board will issue a Request for Qualifications for Architectural Services (RFQ) with the immediate goals of responding to the 2021 capital assessment and incorporating a building redesign to meet the current and future needs of our residents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you renovating the Library?

The building first opened to the community in 1941, and there are building issues consistent with its age. To address these issues and consider additional enhancements to a facility that is so beloved by Glencoe residents, the Board embarked on a process to create a master space plan.

What will the architect do?

By the end of this year, the architect, after consultation with the public, the staff, and Board, will prepare a master space plan with alternatives to meet our needs. The Board and staff will use that plan to determine the next steps to be taken.

When will construction begin?

The Board has not yet established a timeline for construction as no renovation plan has yet been approved. The next step of the process is to solicit qualifications from architectural firms that have experience improving historical buildings, a deep knowledge and understanding of public libraries, and proven communication skills with clients and community members.

Will the Library go to referendum to fund a future renovation?

The Board has not reviewed any specific renovation plans or costs at this time. Depending on final costs of a new space plan, the Board will fully review options for self-financing, state construction grants, private donations, or, if required, a referendum.

I like the Library as it is now, why change?

The Board and staff recognize the emotional attachment many residents have to the library building. It is their firm goal to preserve as many of its historical elements as possible, but there is work that must be done, as is the case with any building constructed in 1941. The Board and Executive Director strive to offer spaces that meet the current and future needs of the community and be home to both traditional and new services, collections, and programs.
